Next New

If I could wish for a new "new media", it would be a next generation social gaming hub. It would have characteristics of existing new media like Discord, which allows communications and sharing, but would also be able to group people and suggest gaming partners depending on the game you are playing. A lot of games today take advantage of multiplayer modes and as a result many competitive scenes have arisen. This has created an environment for competitive game-play even among casual gamers which leads to the biggest problem one can experience: randoms. When you queue up for a match online without friends, you get matched with random people around your skill level. Often times this means an enjoyable experience is rare as the chances of you getting good chemistry with a bunch of random people is very unlikely. However, if you could match with people and talk with them beforehand, you're likely to have a much better time. You can see this idea already in action with how many people search for a community discord or game thread to find teammates. However, this process is still lengthy and requires multiple sources for only a chance at finding a portion of the community. A new media site that can provide an area for people playing the same game to meet, chat, and group-up would make meeting and playing with strangers a lot more fun and improve your experience gaming online overall. It could have separate hubs based on games and even organize the hubs by separating casual and competitive gamers as well.

  1. This seems like a great idea, especially with the growing amount of people using gaming consoles like Xbox and play station. There is so much talk about games like Fortnite, I think a gaming platform for groups of members to get together and play is a creative new media idea.

  2. This would be a gamer's dream come true!
However, on a biased personal note, I can't but imagine that with this further streamlining and allowing for enhanced online experience for gamers would come with further distraction for gamers as I'm part of those group of people who think gaming is such a time-sucker for teens -- and adults too! The idea will be a value-add, certainly.

  3. I'm actually really surprised that there aren't ideas like this already! Gaming is obviously a huge industry and the media we have today seems like it would be a perfect pairing to do cool things like you mentioned. I think when media can consolidate services it is a big win for the users since its more convenient and easy to use.
